Vaucheria sp.; like some other freshwater-algae (for example the red alga Torularia atra)the xanthophyte Vaucheria may be colonised by epibiontic autotroph or heterotroph organisms. Here some examples: left: the diatom Cocconeis pediculus; right: the sessilid protist Platycola longicollis. In consequence there may be other organisms which are in a special ecological relationship with these epibionts like for example rotifers like Encentrum incisum.
